Abstract:The spatiotemporal distribution of the shear strain with steep drop is modeled numerically for a rock sample with a Zshaped fault by use of FLAC3D. Nine parameters related to shear strain with steep drop and released energy are calculated at different deformation stages. The results show that the failure and slip at the inflection points provide a possibility of the middle fault sliding, which causes the overall instability of the sample. The parameters related to the shear strain with steep drop reach peak value in the time close to instability and during the process of instability
