APPLICATION OF T/P ALTIMETER BACKSCATTER DATA TO LAND SURFACE OBSERVATION

Abstract:By use of the Topex/Poseidon radar altimeter data for 13 years,the time series of backscatter coefficient of Greenland ice sheet, the Amazon basin tropical forest and Congo tropical forest, TaklaMakan desert and UbariMurzuq sand sea in Libya, Siberian steppe and North Dakota temperate grassland are discussed. It is found that the time series of Ku and C wave bands and its difference reflect the relations between surface covering, climatic environment and backscatter coefficient.
