Abstract In this paper, we use the data recorded by 23 national seismic stations and 17 experimental seismographs to analyze the characteristics of background noise and the possibility of monitoring the operating state of seismographs by the fractal method. The results show that the fractal method has strong time domain, a high degree of quantification, strong anti-interference ability, and is unrestrained by the observation system parameters. It can test the operation state of the observation system and decrease the situation of interruption of normal records and non-natural interference.
