Abstract In order to improve the reliability of underwater terrain matching navigation, a new method is proposed which is based on contour correlation matching and hypothesis test. In case a false matching is detected, the unscented transformation is used to rematch for merging the terrain observation data, then applies in the new correlation matching. Experiments prove that the method can improve precision and its reliability of matching positioning, and verify the effectiveness of the method.
