Topographic Effect on Coseismic Deformation of the Lushan MS 7.0 Earthquake
Abstract Based on the geometry model of plane fault, taking the 2013 Lushan MS7.0 earthquake as an example, we use the spectral element method to investigate the topographic effect on coseismic deformation. The results show that the influence of topographic effect on coseismic deformation in different directions varies. For the horizontal displacement component, the maximum influence along the fault strike is about 10.3%, while along the vertical fault strike is about 12.4%. For the vertical displacement component, the maximum influence is about 11.9%. Therefore, it is essential to fully consider the influence of topographic effect when calculating surface coseismic deformation or performing finite fault inversion.
