EFFECT OF WENCHUAN EARTHQUAKE ON SEISMIC ACTIVITY IN HUBEI

Abstract Effect of Wenchuan earthquake on Hubei seismic activity is discussed on the basis of the tectonic evolution, the historical seismic activity and seismic focal mechanism solutions and the conclusion considered that Longmenshan fault and the XiangfanGuangji tectonic belt are the western and northern marginal belts of the Yangzi plate which thrusts and intervenes downwards the Tibet and Qinling blocks. The statistics of historical strong earthquakes indicate that the strong earthquakes in western Sichuan region evidently affect seismic activity in Hubei and its adjacent region, after Wenchuan earthquake, it will be possible occuring mediummagnitude earthquakes, besides it points out that the seismic activity of Hubei province in recent several years was the adjustment of the eastern stress field in Hubei before Wenchuan earthquake.
