Abstract The multi-year mean upper layer geostrophic circulation in China coastal waters and the seasonal circulation in south China sea are studied by using the sea level anomaly based on satellite altimetry technique associated with the stable sea surface topography from the satellite gravity data. The research results show the clear Kuroshio effects on the circulation in China coastal waters, and the circulation in South China Sea is predominated by seasonal variation, in winter the whole circulation appears to be cyclone consisted of two subbasin cyclonic gyres in the south and north respectively, in summer the circulation is whole anticyclonic. Through the comparison of the calculated geostrophic circulation with the satellite tracking surface drifting buoy, it is found that the calculated result is in good agreement with surface observation.
