Abstract Earthquake premonitory signals in crustal deformation recording data always contain various disturbances,the premonitory signals must be distinguished from disturbances so as to be used in shortterm earthquake forecasting.So it is important to trace an abnormal signal and distinguish its sort.Because premonitory signals and disturbances come from different sources,they can be sorted and recognized step by step by comparing records of different instruments at a same site or at different sites.The method is demonstrated by tracing an abnormal signal emerging in crustal deformation data before Ninglang M5.7 earthquake.This signal is sorted as a premonitory signal finally.
