Abstract:The method for entire calculation of GPS strain field in large region by using spherical harmonic function is discussed.On the basis of comparing the theoretical results and calculation results, the strain calculating method is tested effectively. Then, the correlation coefficients between theoretical result and calculation result are calculated, and the results show that the strain calculation method is very robust that the correlation coefficient does not decreased significantly with the increasing of addition error. Subsequently, the GPS strain rate field of local network in China mainland using 1999-2004 GPS velocity fields is analyzed and the effectiveness of sphere harmonic method from the viewpoint of distribution law of residual error. In view of the edge effect of sphere harmonic method, it give a solving method which is interpolating outside the researched region before strain calculation. Lastly, the characteristics of spherical harmonic function method are discussed and some advices of strain calculation are given.
